This member of the aster family is closely related to Joe-pye weed, tolerating partial shade though thriving in full sun. Its nectar is particularly important to the Bronze copper and White hairstreak butterflies.
It is a common native in the Eastern half of the United States and Canada almost exclusively in moist and wet areas.
Historically, the plant was thought to promoted the healing of bones and was also used to break fevers through heavy sweating, hence some of its common names which include common boneset, feverwort, aqueweed or sweating plant.
