Bottle gentian grows naturally across from the Midwest to east coast of United States and in eastern Canada in wet to dry mesic prairies, fens and shorelines.

The Eastern carpenter bee also accesses the nectar of the blooms by chewing a small hole at the base of the flower. While this action does not pollinate the plant, it does create an entry point for other smaller pollinators including some honey bees.

Other common names for Bottle gentian are Closed gentian and Closed bottle gentian.
