Among the species that use Big bluestem for nesting sites and seeds is Henslow’s sparrow, Sedge wrens and Western meadowlarks. Native bees use it for nesting material and it serves as a host plant for butterflies, including the Arogos skipper, Ottoe skipper, Cobweb skipper, Common wood nymph, Delaware skipper, Indian Skipper and Dusted skipper.

While adaptable, drought tolerant and able to withstand occasional flooding, Big bluestem does best in full sun and even moisture in order to remain sturdy throughout the three seasons.

Other common names for Big bluestem are tall bluestem, bluejoint, and turkeyfoot due to it’s three-parted seed heads are shaped like a turkey’s foot.
